How to reduce Google Ads CPA without killing volume

A practical checklist for lowering cost per acquisition on Google Ads — from tracking hygiene to negatives, bids and landing pages.

Cost per acquisition (CPA) is the metric that connects ad spend to unit economics. Lowering it usually comes down to two things: spending less on clicks that don’t convert, and converting more of the clicks you already pay for.

Here is the order of operations that produces the fastest, safest wins.

1. Fix tracking before touching bids

If your conversion tracking over-counts, under-counts or double-counts, every Smart Bidding decision is working from a false signal. Check for:

  • Duplicate conversion actions counting the same event
  • Missing conversion values
  • Events marked Primary that should be Secondary
  • Offline conversions not imported

Get this right and CPA often “improves” simply because you are now measuring reality.

2. Cut wasted spend with negatives

Run the search terms report and look for queries that:

  • Include words like free, jobs, salary, diy, reddit, template
  • Match a different intent than the keyword (“software” vs “software developer jobs”)
  • Come from competitors you do not want to bid on

Add them as negatives at the right level. On broad match and Performance Max, negative keyword hygiene is not optional.

3. Prune unprofitable keywords

Sort keywords by cost with zero conversions over a meaningful window. Pause the ones with enough spend to be statistically unlikely to convert. Be careful with low-volume keywords — absence of conversions is not proof of futility.

4. Make Smart Bidding’s job easier

  • Give campaigns enough conversion volume — roughly 30 conversions in 30 days.
  • Use value-based bidding if orders have different values.
  • Do not set target CPA far below current performance; you will starve delivery.
  • Split brand and non-brand so brand’s cheap conversions do not mask non-brand problems.

5. Improve the click-to-conversion rate

CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate. Halving CPC is hard; doubling conversion rate is often easier.

  • Match the landing page headline to the ad and the query.
  • Remove form fields that are not strictly necessary.
  • Show trust signals above the fold.
  • Test mobile speed — every 100ms matters.

6. Use audiences to modulate

Layer observation audiences and adjust bids for high-value segments. Exclude existing customers from acquisition campaigns so you are not paying to re-acquire them.

7. Iterate on evidence, not opinion

Change one thing at a time where you can, give it enough time to exit the learning period, and compare against a stable baseline. Document what you changed and why — this is what makes optimisation compound.
